Terry
McCollum, senior vice president of claims at Alfa Insurance,
has been elected to a three-year term to the board of directors
of the Institute for Business and Home Safety.
The Institute for
Business and Home Safety is a national organization active
in research and development of building materials designed
to withstand storms and other natural disasters. Sponsored
by the insurance industry, the group is also instrumental
in developing and improving building code requirements, land
use planning and land development.
“The organization
is similar to the Institute for Highway Safety which studies
safety for the automobile industry,” McCollum said.
“Improving building standards and proper land use planning
benefit both consumers and the insurance industry. I am pleased
to serve on a board that can have such a positive influence
on the on the lives of the general public.”
McCollum was asked
to serve on the Home Safety Board by the National Association
of Independent Insurers (NAII). His responsibilities will
include setting guidelines and an operating budget as well
as overseeing the organization’s operations of the institution
and its employees.
McCollum joined
Alfa in 1962 and now supervises claims operations in Alabama,
Georgia, Mississippi and Virginia. He is a past chairman of
the board of the Alabama Insurance Guaranty Association and
past chairman of the Claims Committee for the NAII.
A graduate of Auburn
University and Jones School of Law, McCollum is active in
industry, religious and civic organizations including the
United Way, Good Will, Children’s Center, Community
of Christ Church, the Montgomery Claims Association and the
Southeastern Claim Executives Association.
